Brown Fencing Competes at Annual Squad Championships

New York, N.Y. – The Brown men's & women's teams were in action this weekend, taking on some of the top teams in the Northeast at the annual Squad Championships, hosted by NYU. The men's squad finish 11th overall against 20 other teams, posting 75 team points. The women finished eighth amongst 21 other teams, totaling 77 points.

"The US College Squad Championship uses the Olympic relay format, up to a maximum of 45 touches. This format which is new for collegiate fencing, it is very exciting and competitive," said head coach Atilio Tass. "Despite the absence of three key starters on the women's team, Avery Nackman (Foil), Laney Caldwell (Epee) and Caitlin Taylor (Saber), their respective squads had a very good tournament. The timing of this event suits us very well in preparation for the Regional
Championship on March 11."

The Brown men finished eighth in the epee as the team, defeating NYU in the first round, 45-35, before falling to top-seeded St. John's, 45-29. Junior Kelly McGuire was perfect against NYU, going 2-0-1.

The men's foil team was seeded seventh and received an opening round bye, before facing No. 10 Brandeis. In an extremely close matchup, the Bears were edged, 45-43. Rookie Barrett Weiss led the way, winning all three of his bouts.

Brown's men's saber team was also seeded seventh, but was also topped by No. 10 Brandeis, 45-37. Junior Teddy Weller won his first two bouts, before being edged in his final matchup, 5-3.

The women's foil team was seeded ninth and after a first round bye, took on eighth-seeded Yale. The Bears knocked off the Bulldogs 45-22, but could not get past top-ranked Notre Dame in the quarterfinals, falling 45-33. Yukiko Kunitomo lead the way against Yale, winning all three of her matches and allowing opponents just three points, all in the same bout.

The women's foil repeated the Yale matchup with a first round bye and a matchup against No. 8 Yale, but this time the Bears could not edge the Bulldogs, 45-38.

Brown's women's saber squad upset eighth-ranked Haverford in the first round in a one-point thriller, 45-44, but faced top-seeded Columbia in the quarterfinals, falling 45-22. Samantha Gross went 2-1 against Haverford, totaling 23 of the Bear's 45 points.

The fencing team will return to action on March 11 with the NCAA Regional Championships hosted by Boston College.
