Brown Fencing Picks up Seven Wins at Brandeis Invitational

Waltham, Mass. – The Brown men's & women's fencing teams were in action for the third time this season and the final time in 2011 on Sunday, taking part in the Brandeis Invitational. The Bears were victorious over Brandeis, Boston College and MIT on the men's side, while the women went 4-1 in team competition, topping Brandies, BC, MIT and North Carolina.

Against the Brandeis, the men were topped 5-4 in the sabre, but used a 5-4 victory of their own to tie up the team bout. An impressive 7-2 win the epee led by Kelly McGuire, Alexander Chiclana and Benjamin McDonald helped the Bears to a 16-11 win.

The Brown men also edged MIT 14-13 and BC, 15-12 before falling UNC in a close affair, 15-12 and to St. John's, 20-7.

The women had success against Brandeis, losing just 7 total points to the Judges, in a 20-7 victory. Against UNC, the Tar Heels were unable to get going versus the Bears, dropping the sabre and epee events 5-4 and 6-3, before an 8-1 team performance from Hannah Kolus, Vivian Truong and Kathryn Hawrot in the foil.

The Bears also picked up wins against MIT, 19-8 and versus BC, 17-10, but lost a tough contest to St. John's 24-3.

Brown will now break for exams and winter vacation, but pick up their weapons again in 2012 at the Erick Sollee Invitational, hosted by Boston College.
