Brown Fencing Returns from Big One Event with 12 Medals

Northhampton, Mass.. – The Brown fencing team was in action for the first time in the 2011-12 season on Saturday, taking on nine other programs at the annual NEIFC Fall Invitational, or

"Big One". The Bears came out on top in the medal total, taking home 12, including three gold in the six events that were held. MIT finished second with two golds, while Sacred Heart totaled 10 medals with one gold.

Junior Cory Abbe, who took the gold in the women's epee, headed the charge for Brown. Last season's standout rookie Kathryn Hawrot finished first in the women's foil, while freshman Barrett Weiss was victorious in the men's foil.

Laney Caldwell took home a bronze medal in the women's epee, while Peter Tyson  also captured a bronze in the men's sabre.

Brown will be back in action at New Hampshire on Nov. 19, for the NFC No. 1.
