PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It is official. The Brown fencing team will send more student-athletes to the NCAA Championship than it ever has in program history. Teddy Weller will officially accompany four women's fencers to the final meet, as the Bears will send five to the biggest event of them all in collegiate fencing.
The Brown fencing team enjoyed its best NCAA Regional Championship in nearly 11 years as four women's fencers advanced to the NCAA Championship on March 24-27 at Ohio State. Kathryn Hawrot and Avery Nackman in the foil, Cory Abbe in the epee and Caitlin Taylor in the saber have all advanced to the 2011 finals.
The women's foil team was extremely impressive in the regional, as Hawrot finished third overall and Nackman took ninth to advance to the Championship. Abbe took eighth overall in the epee. Taylor was impressive in the sabre, recording a seventh-place finish.
Weller was in line for an at-large bid chance to make it the March 24th qualifier after his 12th-place finis in the sabre.
