PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rookie Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.), the talented newcomer who paced the top-seeded Brown women's foil team to a title-winning performance at the inaugural U.S. Collegiate Squad Championships (Feb. 27, at NYU), was named one of College Fencing 360's Primetime Performers.
Hawrot cruised past her three North Carolina opponents (15-5 total margin, in relay-scoring format) – as Bears posted 45-24 semifinal win. She had impressive closing performance to deliver the title in 45-40 thriller vs. No. 2 seed Penn.
The freshman gave team quick lead against the Quakers with her 5-1 opening score vs. Yuwen Zhao and took the strip in the fifth out with her team leading 16-14 and added to the cushion after a 4-3 battle with Juliana Kulik.
Penn snatched the lead over the next three bouts, taking a 35-31 edge into the final bout – but Hawrot dismantled Aida Abdikulova (a 2010 NCAA entrant), racking up a 14-5 edge in touches to produce the 45-40 winning score.
Hawrot earlier had earned first team all-conference honors, after an impressive third-place women's foil finish (11-4) at the 2011 Ivy League Dual-Meet Championships.
Her brother James Hawrot, a junior epeeist at Harvard, placed 14th at the 2010 NCAAs (narrowly missing All-America honors).
