Cambridge, Mass. – The Brown fencing team traveled to MIT on Sunday at took on a very difficult field of opponents at the Eric Sollee Invitational. The Bears were victorious over NYU, Hunter and Yeshiva while falling to big time programs Duke, Penn State and Penn.
"Considering the strength of the opponents we faced, the experience was a positive weekend," said head coach Atilio Tass. "I thought the men's victory against NYU was very good. Alexander DePaoli, especially, helped us to win."
The men's team was a 16-11 victor over NYU and even though his overall record in the epee was 4-5, it was his victory (5-3 touches) that clinched the win for the Bears.
The men also picked up big wins over Yeshiva (23-4) and Hunter (24-3) and nearly upset Duke (12-15).
Several members also boasted impressive individual records. Kelly McGuire went 11-7 in the epee, while Peter Tyson was 12-6 in the sabre and Michael Roh was 6-2 in the foil.
The women's squad was also impressive against Yeshiva (23-4) and Hunter (18-9), and were edged by NYU (10-17) and Penn (11-16).
Several Bears compiled impressive marks. Avery Nackman was 11-4 in the foil, Cory Abbe was 13-5 in the epee, while both Yukiko Kunitomo and Kathryn Hawrot were both 9-6 in the foil.
Brown is back in action on Feb. 12-13 when they travel to Princeton, N.J. for the Ivy League Championships.
