Fencing Opens Ivy Competition at Cornell
Providence, R.I. – The fencing squads opened Ivy League competition at Cornell this weekend and had five members of the team finish undefeated in their respective events. Senior Randy Alevi (Old Westbury, NY) finished 3-0 in the saber against Cornell, while freshman teammate Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, CA) compiled a 3-0 mark in the saber against Princeton. The men’s side had three foil finishers earn 2-0 marks to help Brown defeat Columbia, 17-10.
The women dropped all three matches, falling 15-12 to Cornell, 21-6 to Princeton and 23-4 to Columbia. On the men’s side, the men were defeated by Princeton, 17-10, after knocking off Columbia.
Against Cornell, Taylor finished with a 2-1 mark in the saber event. Senior Bridget Smith (North Haven, CT) also compiled a 2-1 mark in the epee.
Senior Adam Pantel (Mendham, NJ) and juniors Scott Phillips (Great Neck, NY) and Jonathan Yu (Birmingham, AL) all earned 2-1 finishes against Princeton in the foil.
The men’s team had a strong showing against Columbia with Pantel, sophomore Andrew Pintea (New York, NY) and Yu finishing 2-0 in the foil. Sophomore Peter Tyson (Stony Brook, NY) and freshman Teddy Weller (Princeton, NJ) contributed a 2-1 mark in the saber. For the women, freshman Kelly McGuire (Park City, UT) finished 2-1 in the epee.
The Bears will be back in action on February 28 for their second Ivy Match at the University of Pennsylvania.
