Providence, R.I. – The fencing squads started 2010 on a successful note at the second event of the Northeast Fencing Conference at Boston College on Saturday. The men’s team finished undefeated behind a perfect 13-0 performance by senior foilist Adam Pantel (Mendham, NJ). Freshman Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, CA) led the women to a 6-1 record as she finished 20-1 in the saber event.
The men downed Tufts and Dartmouth by a 21-6 margin. The Bears also defeated Vassar, 17-12, Brandeis 19-8, BC 17-10, and MIT 15-12.
In the men’s foil, junior Jonathan Yu (Birmingham, AL) finished with a 10-4 mark, sophomore Andrew Pintea (New York, NY) finished 10-5 and freshman James Golin (Newton, MA) rounded out the team at 8-2.
In the men’s epee event, senior David Pagliaccio (Dobbs Ferry, NY) led the Bears with a 7-3 finish. Senior captain Henry Liu (Irvington, NY) contributed with a 6-2 mark.
In the men’s saber, the Bears had two top finishers with sophomore Peter Tyson (Stony Brook, NY) finishing 12-4 and freshman Teddy Weller (Princeton, NJ) compiling a 14-2 mark.
On the women’s side, Brown defeated Tufts 24-3. Brown rolled to wins over Vassar, 17-10, Dartmouth 20-7, BC 15-12, and MIT, 16-11. They dropped a close match to Brandeis 14-13.
In the women’s foil, Brown had strong finishes by sophomores Vivian Truong (Brooklyn, NY) and Yukiko Kunitomo (Wellesley, MA), who finished 12-9 and 15-6, respectively. Freshman Avery Nackman (Cross River, NY) led the foil event with a 19-2 finish.
In the women’s epee, Brown had two almost perfect finishes with freshman Cory Abbe at 17-1 and senior Bridget Smith (North Haven, CT) finishing with a 16-3 mark.
The Bears will be back in action on January 30, when they compete in the MIT Invitational at Brandeis University.
