Brown Recovers From Poor Start, Finishing Second and Retaining 21-Point Region Lead
Nov. 19, 2007
Hebron, CT - In its final show of the fall season, the Brown equestrian team was able to overcome a rough start in which it had no points after two events to score 33 points in the final six events and finish second on Saturday. The Bears wound up six points behind Region 1 rival Connecticut, 39-33, in its second show in two weeks at Windcrest Farm. Four Brown point riders earned blue ribbons, as the Bears finished the first half of the season with a 222-201 lead over the Huskies, nearly 60 points ahead of anyone else in the region.
After freshmen Brianne Goutal (New York, NY) and Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) failed to pin in Open and Intermediate Fences, UConn held a 12-0 lead. However, first-place points from sophomore Rachel Griffith (Merrimack, NH) in Novice Fences, senior Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) in Open Flat, and sophomore Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) in Intermediate Flat got the Bears right back into the thick of things.
Gruener got a third in Intermediate Flat for four points, and freshman Kathryn Eng (New York, NY) finished sixth in her Advanced Walk Trot Canter class for one point, before sophomore Kona Shen (Seattle, WA) got seven more points with a blue ribbon in Walk Trot.
Eight other Brown riders earned blue ribbons: freshman Allegra Aron (Burlingame, CA) in Open Fences, freshman Elise Fishelson (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) in Open Flat, senior Courtney Pope (Concord, MA) in Intermediate Flat, sophomore Emily Bourdeau (Longmeadow, MA) in Novice Flat, senior Lucia Corso (New Haven, CT) in Advanced Walk Trot Canter, freshman Vanessa Rubin (Reading, MA) in her first collegiate show and junior Kiauntee Murray (Jersey City, NY) in Beginner Walk Trot Canter, and senior McCall Lewis (Murray, UT) in Walk Trot.
Pope and Lewis became the 10th and 11th Bears to qualify for Regionals. Pope pointed out of Intermediate Flat with her blue ribbon, with Lewis doing the same in Walk Trot.
The Bears will next compete in February with the final four shows in the regular season before the All-Ivy show and postseason competition.
