Brown Wraps Up Fall Season With Fourth at Wesleyan

Nov. 17, 2008

Middletown, CT - The equestrian team wrapped up its fall season at Wesleyan this weekend, taking fourth place at the show. Though the finish allowed URI to close on the Bears in the season standings, Bruno was able to hold on to a two-point lead, ending the fall in first place overall.

The day started off well for Brown, as both Liz Giliberti (Washington, D.C.) and Elise Fishelson (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) took first in their classes of the Open Fences. However, neither of them was the point rider, and the Bears picked up only one point from the division.

Sophomore Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) quickly helped alleviate the loss, however, as she placed first in her class of the Intermediate Fences as the point rider, pulling Brown within two points of URI for the lead. Senior Leona Rosenblum (New York, N.Y.) added a third in Novice Fences to conclude the jumping.

Moving to the flat portion of the show, generally the stronger half for Brown, the Bears found themselves only four points out of the lead. Giliberti and Fishelson again started Bruno off strong, as they each took second in their classes of the Open Flat as well, this time with Giliberti as the point rider. In the third class, senior Cody Auer (Fairfield, CT) pinned third, continuing the terrific run in the division.

The strong showing by the Open riders also had significant ramifications for the individuals, as Giliberti and Fishelson continued to extend their lead in the Cacchione Cup Standings, which determines the rider sent to Nationals from each region. With her two seconds, Giliberti increased her total to 61 points, making her lead an impressive 12 points. Fishelson found herself in second with 49 points at the conclusion of the show, passing riders from JWU and URI in the process, each of whom have 46.

Gruener also continued her terrific show, as she pinned third as the point rider in her class of the Intermediate Flat, keeping Brown in the mix with four more points. Sophomore Katy Eng (New York, N.Y.) also rode well, taking second in the Novice Flat. In the Advanced Walk Trot Canter, the Bears were strong as well, as newcomer Colleen Brogan took first in her class, while freshman point rider Cara Rosenbaum pinned second for five critical points.

After struggling to pick up points in the Beginner Walk Trot Canter and Walk Trot, Brown wrapped up the show in a tie for fourth with 26 points, 15 behind winner URI. However, the 17-point lead that the Bears entered the show with proved to be too much to overcome, and they held on to win the season standings.

Though the show concludes Brown's fall season, the Bears will be back in action in the spring, with their first show tentatively scheduled to take place on February 14 back at Wesleyan.
