Hebron, CT - With three point riders winning four blue ribbons, the Brown equestrian team placed second at its show Saturday, hosted by Wesleyan at Windcrest Farm. The Bears finished with 39 points, just one behind winner UConn. Junior Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) had first-place finishes in both the open fences and open flat events, while freshman Elizabeth Giliberti (Washington, DC) and junior Irmak Tasindi (Istanbul, Turkey) earned the Bears a full seven points in intermediate fences and walk trot canter, respectively.
The Bears started off hot, as Keefe and Giliberti gave their team a lead after the first two fences divisions. Freshman Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) earned two points for her fifth-place finish, giving Brown 16 points after fences.
Keefe then opened the flat portion of the show with another blue, giving the Bears a three-point lead on Johnson and Wales. She later competed in a ride off for point rider with three other competitors, but lost, earning reserve point rider honors. Giliberti took sixth in intermediate flat, which became the Bears' dropped score. Bogdonoff placed second in novice flat for five points, while junior Katie Goetz (Barrington, RI) and senior Rachel Lubin (Watchung, NJ) took first place and second place in their novice classes.
Tasindi was one of three Bears to get blue ribbons in walk trot canter, as junior Kelly Qu (Irvine, CA) won her group and junior Kristen Beck (Basking Ridge, NJ) won her beginner group. Junior Lucia Corso (New Haven, CT) pinned third as the point rider in walk trot, while junior Stephanie Carmack (Pawcatuck, CT) pinned first.
The Bears' final show of the fall will take place this coming Saturday at Connecticut College. Brown currently holds a 14 point lead in Zone 1, with 143 points to URI's 129 and UConn's 128.
