Equestrian Finishes Fourth at Windswept
Oct. 21, 2008
Providence, R.I. - The Brown equestrian team came out with a close fourth place finish on a cold, windy day at Windswept Farms on Sunday, narrowly losing to Connecticut College, JWU, and URI. The Bears did finish an impressive 14 points ahead of UConn, however, giving them a sizable boost in the season standings over a traditional rival. Sophomore Elise Fishelson (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) led the way for Bruno, with two firsts, including one as the point rider. Fishelson also won the Reserve High Point Rider in a four-way ride off, capping off a solid day.
Fishelson set the tone for the Bears early with a blue ribbon in the first class of the Open Flat division, although she was not the point rider. Junior Elizabeth Giliberti (Washington, D.C.) followed that up with a second in the third class as the point rider, giving Brown five points and moving them into second after the first event. In the Intermediate Flat sophomore Allegra Aron (Burlingame, CA) kept the momentum going, pinning first while riding as the point rider. Classmate Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) capped off the flat divisions with a second in Novice Flat, giving the Bears another five points and pushing them into a tie for second with JWU.
Fishelson and Aron each shone once again to lead off the fences, as they took first and second respectively in the second class of the Open Fences. Giliberti also pinned third in the final class of the division, capping off an impressive jumping display for the Bears. Gruener, the only Brown rider in Intermediate Fences, grabbed an important blue ribbon in the first class of the division, keeping the Bears alone in second, behind only JWU. Bruno continued to shine as the fences concluded, as point rider junior Emily Bordeau (Longmeadow, MA) took fourth in the final class, picking up an important three points for the team, as it moved them into a tie for first with Conn College.
After a strong performance for much of the day, the Bears stumbled slightly down the stretch, as point rider junior Jenny Grover (Brooklyn, N.Y.) missed a diagonal in the Walk Trot Canter division, and came in fifth. Sophomore Cate Berger (La Grange, IL) concluded the day with a fourth place finish in Walk Trot as the point rider, pushing Brown's point total to 32, only seven behind the winner.
In the season standings Brown is currently second overall with 101 points, four behind frontrunner URI and five in front of third place team JWU. The Bears will be in action again on Saturday, November 1, when they travel to Connecticut College.
