East Greenwich, RI - After finishing the 2006-07 season with a third-place finish at IHSA Naitonals, the best such finish in the program's history, the Brown equestrian team did not rest on its laurels. The Bears began the 2007-08 season with a first-place finish at Faith Hill Farm on Saturday, finishing with 42 points to top a strong effort from fellow Region 1 power Connecticut, which had 39 points, and host Rhode Island, which had 30 points.
Sophomore Elizabeth Giliberti (Washington, DC) took home high point rider honors with two first-place finishes, earning the Bears 14 points as the point rider in Intermediate Fences and Intermediate Flat. Freshman Brianne Goutal (New York, NY) was impressive in her collegiate debut, earning reserve high point rider after winning her classes of Open Fences and Open Flat.
Senior tri-captain Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA), the defending Open Level Point Champion in Region 1, had some bad luck. She pinned second in Open Fences, but failed to pin in Open Flat when her horse was spooked by another horse and reared in front of the judge. However, that ride was dropped from Brown's score, as sophomore Rachel Griffith (Merrimack, NH) pinned second in Novice Fences and senior Stephanie Carmack (Pawcatuck, CT) pinned third in Walk Trot to bring the team's total to 42 points.
