Brown Equestrian Headed to Nationals

April 8, 2007

South Hadley, MA - For the fourth time in 10 years, the Brown equestrian team has qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Horse Show, finishing second at Zones at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday. The Bears finished with 41 points, behind host and defending national champion Mount Holyoke, which had 48 points on the horses its riders had practiced on all season, but ahead of third-place Stonehill (32 points) and fourth-place Dartmouth (31 points).

Freshman Elizabeth Giliberti (Washington, DC) led the way with two first-place finishes for Brown in Intermediate Fences and Intermediate Flat, the second and fourth events of the day. Those helped the Bears keep pace with the Lyons, as the teams traded first- and second-place finishes to start the day. Junior tri-captain Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) started the show with a sixth-place finish in Individual Open Fences. She kicked off the College Cup events with a second-place finish in Open Fences, and after Giliberti won in Fences, freshman Rachel Griffith (Merrimack, NH) came in second in Novice Fences.

Giliberti's second blue ribbon tied the teams at 24, but the important thing was that both were ahead of Stonehill and Dartmouth by 10 points. Freshman Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) finished in third in Novice Flat, and sophomore Leona Rosenblum (New York, NY) and junior Stephanie Carmack (Pawcatuck, CT) finished fourth in Walk Trot Canter and Walk Trot, respectively. Holyoke was able to pull away in those events, but the Bears clinched after Walk Trot, as Stonehill took third. Keefe capped the Collegiate Cup events with a first-place finish in Open Flat, then placed second in Individual Open Flat to qualify for Nationals in that event.

Nationals will be held in Springfield, Mass., from May 3-6. The Bears will compete as a team against 19 other schools, while Keefe will participate in both the Individual Open Fences and the Cacchione Cup competitions. Before that, Bruno will get a warm-up at the All-Ivy Competition at Dartmouth's barn in Etna, NH.
