Glades Ferry, CT - Junior tri-captain Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) of the Brown equestrian team had a fantastic day at Regionals on Saturday, defeating URI's Amanda Tustian in a ride-off for the Zone 1, Region 1 bid to compete for the Cacchione Cup as the nation's best collegiate rider. Keefe was also the lone Bear to qualify for Zones as an individual, placing first in Open Fences and second in Open Flat at the event, held at Mystic Valley Hunt Club.
Keefe's success was the highlight of the day for the Bears, but several of her teammates had near-misses in qualifying for Zones. Senior Kimberly Mickenberg (Armonk, NY) placed third in Novice Flat, falling one place short of qualifying for Zones. Senior Marissa Geoffroy (New York, NY) was fourth in Open Flat, and senior Grace Peloquin (Peekskill, NY) was fifth in Intermediate Flat.
Despite having Keefe as the lone individual qualifier, the Bears will compete at Zones as a team next Saturday against the three other Regional Champions in Zone 1 - Dartmouth (Region 2), Mount Holyoke (Region 3), and Stonehill (Region 4). Mount Holyoke will have the luxury of hosting Zones at its barn in South Hadley, Mass. The top two teams in that foursome will advance to Nationals, held May 3-6 in Springfield, Mass. Keefe is guaranteed a spot at Nationals regardless, as she will compete against the other 29 IHSA Regional Champions for the Cacchione Cup.
