Hebron, CT - The Bears rode to a fourth place finish at the opening show of the spring season at Wesleyan College over the weekend. Though the finish slips Brown a slim five points behind URI in the season standings, junior Liz Giliberti (Washington, D.C.) had a solid individual performance, and increased her lead in the Cacchione Cup standings to 12 points.
Sophomore Elise Fishelson (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), who is currently second in the Cacchione Cup, started the day off well with a second place finish in the first class of Open Fences. Giliberti, competing as the point rider, then pinned fourth in the third class, giving Brown three early points.
Junior Rachel Griffith (Merrimack, N.H.) continued the strong opening for Bruno in Intermediate Fences, pinning first despite a tough draw and pushing Brown to an early lead. After a drop in the Novice Fences, Giliberti came through again for the Bears, taking a blue ribbon in her class of the Open Flat for another seven points. Fishelson also enjoyed another strong ride, coming in second in her class.
A poor draw in Intermediate Flat kept the Bears off the board, as point rider Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) did not pin despite a solid ride. Bruno regained some momentum in the Novice Flat though, as senior Leona Rosenblum (New York, N.Y.) pinned first in her class, earning seven points for Brown. However, the Bears picked up only three points over the final three classes, for a total of 27 points, good for a tie with UConn for fourth place. Rhode Island College won the competition with 36 points.
Final scores: 1st - RIC 36, 2nd - URI and RWU with 33, 3rd - Wesleyan with 31, 4th - Brown and UConn with 27 points, 5th - JWU and Post with 26 points.
Season Standings: URI 237, Brown 232, JWU 211, UConn 197, RWU 193.
