REHOBOTH, Mass. – A trio of first place ribbons helped the Brown equestrian team open the 2013 season with a second place finish at the Johnson and Wales University Show at the JWU Equine Center on Saturday. The Bears narrowly missed taking the top overall spot and trailed first-place Becker College, which earned its first-ever victory, by a mere four points.
Freshman Kabisa Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) led the way by taking first place in the intermediate flat and second in the open fences. Sophomore Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior Laura Kirk (Needham, Mass.) also grabbed top spots in the novice flat and walk trot canter, respectively, to knot the standings at 32 points each for Brown and Becker with just the walk trot remaining.
Junior Amanda Picciotto (New York, N.Y.) pinned third in the open flat, freshman Leah Loerinc (North Darmouth, Mass.) placed fourth in the walk trot and junior Haley Roumimper (Scotts Valley, Calif.) took fifth in the intermediate fences to round out Brown's strong showing in the team's season opener.
The Bears are slated for their lone home event of the fall when they host the Brown University Show at Windswept Farm on Sunday, Oct. 13.
