Six Brown Riders Qualify for Zones at Regionals

Gales Ferry, Conn. – The Brown Equestrian team competed at Regionals on Saturday and of the 16 riders to qualify for Zones, six of them were Bears. The other 10 riders came from the other nine schools in Brown's region.

The day began with the open fences and Brown had two riders out of the six in the class. Senior captain Allegra Aron had a tough draw with Hugo, a big chestnut but she rode him well but he was late behind on a couple of changes. Senior captain Elise Fishelson had a stong ride on Clue from URI.  Fishelson pinned fourth and Aron pinned fifth in the event.

In the intermediate fences junior captain Rebecca McGoldrick rode Clue in the first round and won the class.

The open flat was a very strong class with all Cacchione Cup contenders. Fishelson drew a young gray named Argent. Senior captain Dakota Gruener looked great on a bay named Got Milk but had problems getting the right lead canter transition. Four riders were called back including Fishelson to ride a test.  She rode a great test for the judges and won the class.

Brown had three riders in the intermediate flat. Katy Eng on Seas, McGoldrick on Cato and Lindsay Wong on Hugo. It was another very strong class and the judge tested all six riders on different horses.  Eng pinned third, McGoldrick fourth and Wong fifth.

The novice fences was a big class with 12 riders. Sophomore Allison Dungey had a very strong ride on Louie, who proved to not be the easiest draw.  In the judges' test, Dungey went last as the second rider on Louie and her ride pinned first.

In the novice flat, there were 14 riders and they ran two classes.  Cara Rosenbaum was in the first class on Soleil  and Eleanor Sharpe was in the second class on Tresor. Sharpe and Rosenbaum put together near-perfect rides and pinned first and second, respectively.

The final class of the day was the walk trot.  There were eight riders including sophomore Karolina Woroniecka who drew Jose, a large pony from URI.  Three riders were called back for the test.  The test included trotting a 20 meter circle near the in-gate and sitting trot back to the line. Woronieca rode a nice circle and a very confident sitting trot back to the line and took first overall in the class.
