Bears Take Second at Wesleyan to Kick Off Spring Season

Brown started the second half of its season on a positive note over the weekend, taking a close second to URI at the Wesleyan show, and continuing to lead in the season standings after a strong fall portion.  The Bears were led by senior Elizabeth Giliberti, who took a first and third at the show, and regained the lead in the Cacchione Cup standings, which allows the top point rider in the region to go directly to Nationals.

The day began with the Open Fences, where Giliberti, competing as the point rider, quickly got the Bears off to a good start, taking first in her class.  Junior Allegra Aron also had a good ride, finishing second in the same class, and blocking other point riders from scoring well.  In the second class, senior Rachel Griffith continued the strong defensive tactics, taking another first for the Bears.

In the Intermediate Fences, sophomore Rebecca McGoldrick again provided a strong ride in the lead off spot, earning seven more points for Brown with a first in her class, and giving Bruno a 14-10 lead over URI through two events.  In the Novice Fences, junior Kary Eng turned in the first of two solid rides, picking up a second in her class, and pointing up to Intermediate in the process, though she was not the point rider.

After a third from Giliberti in the Open Flat, McGoldrick again picked up points for the Bears, pinning second in her class in the Intermediate Flat.  Eng then followed with another Brown win, taking first in her class of the Novice Flat, and again pointing up to Intermediate after her ride.

In Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter, rookie Dara Goldberg picked up a blue ribbon in her first ride with the team, followed by a second from Karolina Woroniecka in the Walk-Trot to close out the day.  With the points, Brown moved to 30 on the day, just behind URI's 38, but enough to edge host school Wesleyan, which finished with 29.

The Bears will be back in action next Saturday, when they travel to Storrs, CT to compete in the UConn show.
