NEW YORK – Brown softball earned an 8-0 win to start Ivy League play as part of a double header split against Columbia on Saturday (March 18).
GAME 1: Brown 8, Columbia 0 (5 Innings)
The Bears offense came alive and Brown got a fantastic gem thrown by Alexis Guevara as Brown earned a run-rule win over Columbia to start Ivy League play.
Brown's first run came in the top of the second after Julia Gubner singled with one out. Leah Carey ran for Gubner and stole second before Cameron Zytkewicz Ray singled to center to bring home Carey.
Guevara faced trouble in the second with Columbia loading the bases with two outs on back-to-back walks. The first pitch of the next at bat was a foul out to end the inning with Brown still up 1-0.
The Bears opened things up in the third with walks to Vanessa Alexander and Hsiao to start the inning. After a sac bunt, Dara English reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Alexander. Brown got back-to-back singles by Brianna Rodriguez and Meghan Gormley to score two more runs and a sac fly by Gubner put Brown up 5-0.
Alexander scored another run in the sixth after a walk and a single by Hsiao moved her to third. Laurel Moody singled up the middle to bring home Alexander. Two batters later, Jasmine Hsiao scored Brown's seventh run on a wild pitch.
The Bears jumped ahead 8-0 after Gormley walked to start the inning and moved to third on a sac bunt and groundout. Moe Kastens doubled to right center to bring home Gormley.
After allowing a single with one out in the bottom of the third, Guevara was in control for the rest of the game, sitting down the last eight Lions. Guevara allowed just three hits and struck out four batters to pick up her second win of the season.
GAME 2: Columbia 2, Brown 1
Jasmine Hsiao hit a solo home run but the Bears could not muster any other offense in a one-run loss to Columbia to close out the day. Jodie Aguirre gave up two runs in 2.1 innings and Annie Finch threw 3.2 inning of shutout relief, allowing just two hits.
Brown ended up with just four hits with one hit each by Hsiao, English, Rodriguez and Gormley. Gormley and Gubner also reached on walks but Brown let six runners on base in the loss.
Columbia got things started with a solo home run in the second and doubled its lead with a solo shot in the third that chased Aguirre from the game.
The Bears got runners on second in both the second and fourth innings but could not get a run across. Brown's first run came in the fifth on Hsiao's second homer of the season.
Brown threatened again with English singling to start the inning and Niki Kim moving the third after running for English, on a groundout and passed ball. Gormley walked and stole second but a strikeout and flyout ended the inning in Brown's last threat of the game.
