Martinez, Olson Earn Brown Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Men’s track & field senior distance runner Martin Martinez and women’s gymnastics senior Anya Olson have earned Brown University Athletics Student-Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 5-11, Brown announced on Monday.

Senior distance runner Martin Martinez became the first runner in school history to break the four-minute mile barrier on an indoor track at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Saturday. A native of Waukegan, Ill., Martinez clocked in at a time of 3:59.38, becoming just the second Bear to run under four minutes in the mile, alongside Greg Whiteley’s outdoor run of 3:59.12 in 1989. 

Anya Olson, Gymnastics, Senior, Farmington Hills, Mich.
Senior gymnast Anya Olson scored season highs on bars (9.775), floor (9.700), and vault (9.550) to help Brown set a season-best team score of 193.325 in a quad meet at the University of Maryland on Sunday. A native of Farmington Hills, Mich., Olson helped the Bears establish season highs on vault (48.100) and floor (48.050) and match their season best score on bars (48.750).
