Galiardo, Mehta Earn Brown Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Wrestling senior 157-pounder Steven Galiardo and women’s basketball sophomore guard Shayna Mehta have earned Brown University Athletics Student-Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 27 to Mar. 5, Brown announced on Monday.

Senior 157-pounder Steven Galiardo finished in fourth place in the 157-pound weight class at the 113th Eastern Intercolleigate Wrestling Association Championships, placing for the third straight year at EIWAs. The Chicago, Ill., native and No. 8 seed won both of his bouts on Friday over Colby Knight of Harvard and Jake Kaminsky of Hofstra to reach the semifinals. On Saturday, he defeated Zack Davis of Navy to reach the third-place match before falling to Mike D’Angelo of Princeton. Galiardo placed fifth in 2016 and eighth in 2015 at 149 lbs. at EIWAs. 

Shayna Mehta, Women’s Basketball, Sophomore, San Francisco, Calif.
Sophomore guard Shayna Mehta recorded 20.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game to lead Brown to wins over Columbia and Cornell and a berth in the inaugural Ivy League Tournament. A native of San Francisco, Calif., she made 15-of-25 field goals, 5-of-8 3-pointers, and 6-of-7 free throws on the week. She scored 28 points, making a career-high 11 field goals (11-of-16 overall, 4-of-5 on 3-pointers), along with six rebounds and three assists in a de facto play-in game at Cornell on Saturday. She posted a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds at Columbia on Friday.
