Alumni Spotlight – Pat Kelleher ’92

A four-year member of the Bears’ men’s hockey program, Pat Kelleher ’92 has continued to excel in the sport of hockey, currently as the Executive Director of USA Hockey.

Prior to being named Executive Director in the summer of 2017, Kelleher guided USA Hockey’s efforts in development, beginning in 2008, with a focus on increasing participation across the country, particularly at the entry level. In 2000, he helped launch the United States Ice Rink Association, a non-profit national membership organization for individuals, facilities and vendors in the ice rink and arena industry.

Kelleher’s professional career in hockey began soon after he graduated from Brown, with a concentration in business economics, as an assistant coach at UMass Boston (1993-94). He then spent two years as the hockey director at the Ice Centre of San Jose from 1994-96. From there, Kelleher was the director of hockey for the Twin Rinks Ice Pavillion in Buffalo Grove, Ill., for one season (1997-98) and then went on to do another one-year stint as the national hockey program coordinator for the Ice Skating Institute in Buffalo Grove. Kelleher later served as the director of hockey for the Wilmette (Ill.) Hockey Association from 1998-2000.

In 2011, Kelleher created the “It Starts With A Stick” campaign to connect USA Hockey’s membership to the organization’s charitable mission through raising funds to provide 12,000 hockey sticks to new participants each year.

In addition to his multiple roles with USA Hockey, Kelleher has been a youth hockey coach for most of the last 25 years. He served on the International Ice Hockey Federation Facilities Committee from 2002-10 and was also a member of the board of directors of the OneGoal Association from 2006-12.
