BrownBears.com features one former male and female student-athlete who has gone on to achieve success in the workplace, as well as exhibit the spirit of Brown University within the community. The installments will provide highlights of the selectees’ athletic careers at Brown and offer a glimpse into their current career paths.

Alumni Spotlight – Karen Emma ’97

A rare two-sport student-athlete at Brown, competing in both women’s hockey and softball, Karen Emma ’97 had a successful senior year, winning both ECAC and Ivy League titles in hockey while going undefeated (22-0-0 ECAC and 10-0-0 in Ivy), and the softball team capturing the Ivy League Championship. Outside of College Hill, Emma also was a member of the United States Olympic Development Program in hockey.

Emma is currently the Founder and President of Universal Wealth Management in Cranston, R.I. Graduating from Brown with degrees in Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations and Psychology, Emma began her finance career shortly after graduation in 1999 as a Planning Specialist and Financial Advisor, providing tailored investment advice for Citigroup Smith Barney. After eight years with the company, Emma formed Universal Wealth Management, LLC., to provide financial and insurance services. Since 2007, Emma has provided personal, family, business, estate, healthcare and career financial advice to clients.

Additionally, Emma is a registered representative with Royal Alliance Associates, Inc., a prominent independent, full service broker-dealer.

Since competing in collegiate athletics, Emma has continued to be involved in sports and served as the head coach of the St. Mary Academy Bay View women’s hockey team. The squad won three state championships (2004-05, 2007-08 and 2008-09) and was the state runner-ups four times (2005-06, 2006-07, 2009-10 and 2010-11). In 2012, the R.I. Interscholastic League honored Emma’s accomplishments and contributions to women’s hockey and named the Division 1 League the ‘Emma’ Division. Emma was inducted into the St. Mary Academy Bay View Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. She was also named the R.I. Schoolgirl Coach of the Year in 2005.
