Gottlieb, Shnayder Named to Capital One Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women’s crew junior Rachel Gottlieb (Bow, N.H.) and gymnastics senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, Ill.) were named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Team as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America, it was announced on Thursday. The pair will move on to the Capital One Academic All-America® ballot.

Gottlieb, a geology and physics/mathematics concentrator with a 4.0 grade point average, rows in the third seat of the varsity eight boat for the nation’s top-ranked women’s crew, propelling the Bears to a 10-1 overall record and undefeated 4-0 Ivy League mark. Gottlieb helped Brown wrap up the regular season with a five-race sweep of No. 11 Yale as the varsity eight posted a 5:54.50 finish for its best mark since 2006. Gottlieb and the rest of the Bears will vie for their first Ancient Eight title since 2008 when they compete at this weekend’s Ivy League Women’s Rowing Championship.

Shnayder, a neuroscience concentrator with a 3.90 GPA, co-captained the Bears to the most successful season in Brown gymnastics history, highlighted by a second-straight Ivy Classic Championship and the program’s first ECAC Championship. A USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals First Team All-American and All-Ivy Classic First Team pick, Shnayder was named an ECAC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and represented the Bears at the NCAA University Park Regional Championships.

The Capital One Academic All-District® Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, as only student-athletes who maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and are significant contributors to their team's success are eligible for nomination. All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
