Brown Student-Athletes Gain Global Sport Community Fellowships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Nine Brown University student-athletes, as well as a recent alumna and a club sport student-athlete, have earned Global Sport Community Fellowships through the Brown University Swearer Center's Global Sport Leadership Initiative.

The Bears' nine current varsity student-athletes who have received Global Sport Community Fellowships include Jessica Blake West '20 (women's swimming & diving), Abby Carchio '20 and Christine Etzel '19 (women's soccer), Katie Hammaker '19 (field hockey), Dominique Leonidas '21 (women's basketball), Matthew McShea '21 (men's lacrosse) and Hafsa Moinuddin '19 (women's lacrosse), Katie Orona '18 (softball), and Patrick Petteruti '21 (baseball).

Recent alumna and current women's rugby assistant coach Oksana Goretaya '17 and Bradyn Jasper, a graduate student on the club men's rugby team, also gained a joint fellowship.

The Global Sport Community Fellows Program is a dynamic summer fellowship opportunity for Brown University student-athletes focused on strengthening the capacity of local community organizations to deliver sport opportunities for Providence-area youth.

The Global Sport Leadership Initiative connects campus and community partners in an effort to explore the ways sport can enhance the academic experience and engage communities. The initiative uses a series of graduated curricular and co-curricular experiences and the experience of participating in intercollegiate athletics as a means to develop students, serve the community and integrate sport into the broader teaching and learning goals of the university, particularly the university's initiative on engaged scholarship.
