Monique Kapitulik Wolanin ’91

Monique was a mainstay as a defender for the Brown women’s lacrosse team from 1988-1991. The Grosvenordale, CT native had a tremendous four-year career at Brown, earning post-season honors in each of her four years on the team.
As a freshman, Monique made an immediate impact on the Bears’ defense. She tallied one goal and two assists on the season, and received Brown’s Rookie of the Year Award. Monique was also honored by the Ivy League, earning honorable mention All-Ivy honors.
As a sophomore, Monique continued the success of her freshman campaign, thus being recognized as the Bears’ best defender. She was a First Team All-New England selection and also earned Second Team All-Ivy Honors.
In her junior year, Monique received national recognition as one of the top defenders in the country. She was named to the Brine Women’s Lacrosse All-American Second Team. Again, she earned First Team All-New England honors and was also a unanimous selection for First Team All-Ivy honors.
Monique continued her stellar play, and was named team captain as a senior. The honors came pouring in at the end of the season, and Monique was named a First Team All- American, First Team All New England, and First Team All-Ivy. She was selected to play in the North-South Senior All-Star game, and earned a tryout with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Monique was one of 150 women’s lacrosse players to earn an invitation to the tryout.
Monique’s tenure on the Brown lacrosse team coincided with Hall of Fame member Suzanne Bailey. Monique and Suzanne were an incredible duo on the field, with Monique often feeding Suzanne from the back, creating numerous scoring chances for Suzanne.
Monique graduated in 1991, with a BA in International Relations. As a senior, Monique received the esteemed Brown Distinguished Athlete award for her athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship. Upon graduation from Brown, Monique continued her education at Harvard University, receiving a Master of Education in Admission Planning and Social Policy in 1999. Monique currently serves as Director of Admission for the Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT. She is the girl’s lacrosse coach, and has also served as the girl’s basketball and cross country coach at Pomfret. Monique resides in Connecticut with her husband, Bruce, and their daughter, Blake.
