Frank A. “Dick” Spellman ’28, a native of Somers, Conn., and a graduate of Moses Brown School, compiled a 17-3-1 record in wrestling while at Brown, captained the team, and was a two-time New England champion. Wrestling at 158 pounds, he posted a 6-2 record as a sophomore and captured the New Englands. While a junior, Spellman went undefeated (7-0-1) and again took first place in the New Englands. After a 4-1 senior season, Spellman finished second in New England competition. He was the third Spellman to wrestle for Brown, following his brothers Bob ’23 and John ’24. The latter, who was inducted into the Brown Hall of Fame a year ago, was light heavyweight champion at the 1924 Olympics. Frank Spellman was president of the Cammarian Club and was voted the most popular member of the senior class. He earned his M.D. from Cornell in 1932 and for many years has conducted a private practice in internal medicine in White Plains, NY. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a Major. His son, Frank A. Spellman, III, is a member of the Brown Class of 1960.
