Walter H. Snell '13 was an All-American catcher in his senior year before signing with the Boston Red Sox managed by Bill Carrigan. A solid hitter and an extremely competent and heady receiver, Captain Snell ranks high on the list of Brown baseball immortals. Returning to Brown as a professor of botany, Snell also coached 48 teams in baseball, football, basketball, and soccer. He was head basketball coach in 1922-23, head baseball coach from 1922-26, and assistant in football coaching and scouting from 1921-39 under Coaches Robinson and McLaughry. During World War II, Snell served four years as athletic director.
