Orland F. Smith '27 was offensive guard and defensive tackle on the undefeated Iron Men of 1926. As an example of his versatility, Smith was selected by Grantland Rice as a tackle on his All-American team while, at the same time, several of the wire services named him an All-American as a running guard. Smith played the game of football with extreme competitiveness. Coach Tuss McLaughry once described him as a player who "always went for the jugular." Smith was a member of the Providence Steam Rollers when that NFL eleven won the world championship in 1928.
