Unlike many collegiate athletes, Jon Smith's athletic career did not end when he received his diploma in 1983. Following his commencement, Smith continued on to the highest level of competitive rowing - the Olympics. A three-year member of the Brown rowing team, Smith was an oarsman on the varsity boat that won the IRA Championship and placed third at the National Championships in Cincinnati. As a senior, he was a recipient of the Brown Rowing Associations Coach's Cup that is given annually to the person that has made the greatest contribution to the Brown rowing program. Following graduation, Smith continued to develop the greatness that he exhibited at Brown. He has won a total of six medals in international competition including a gold medal in the 1987 World Championship in Denmark; a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles; and a bronze medal in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. In 1988, Smith was named the U.S. Rowing Association "Male Athlete of the Year." Jon is currently a first-year MBA student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he is a Steven F.
