Brenton G. Smith '11, a keen student of the game, was perhapsBrown's most intelligent tackle of his period. He was certainly oneof the most powerful and aggressive. Smith had great speed andfrequently beat the ends down the field under punts. He also hadexcellent pursuit and often made tackles on the other side of thefield from his normal defensive position. Described by Coach EdwardNorth Robinson as "the perfect all-around tackle," Smith had fewpeers in the East when he played on the fine teams of 1909 and1910. The 6-2, 210-pounder was captain of the swimming team andcompeted in the relay, 220, and 440. During the 1930's he served asline coach at Brown.
