Brenton G. Smith '11, a keen student of the game, was perhaps Brown's most intelligent tackle of his period. He was certainly one of the most powerful and aggressive. Smith had great speed and frequently beat the ends down the field under punts. He also had excellent pursuit and often made tackles on the other side of the field from his normal defensive position. Described by Coach Edward North Robinson as "the perfect all-around tackle," Smith had few peers in the East when he played on the fine teams of 1909 and 1910. The 6-2, 210-pounder was captain of the swimming team and competed in the relay, 220, and 440. During the 1930's he served as line coach at Brown.
