Dick Rento was at home in the Smith Swimming Center as captain of the Brown swimming and water polo teams, but he is probably best remembered as one of Coach Ed Reed’s finest water polo players. On the frosh-soph team Dick scored 18 goals. (He was also #2 in the 100-yard butterfly on the swim team.) As a sophomore he scored 39 goals as the water polo team went 21-5-1, finishing 7th in the NCAA Championships. (#1 100-yard butterflyer on the swim team, #2 50 & 100-yard freestyler, #3 200-yard backstroker.)
As a junior Dick scored 40 goals and was selected Al-New England first team, All-East second team. As a senior Dick scored 77 goals for a new school record. He was only one of three players outside of California to receive honorable mention All-American. He was also named All-East and All-New England first team. Brown won their first Eastern Championship that year with Dick scoring the winning goal in the closing seconds of the final game.
Dick went into the Brown-Dartmouth program in medicine and did his surgical training at Northwestern. He is currently a urological surgeon in Newport News, VA. He and his wife, Lisa Casanova Rento, Brown ’82 (former captain of the Brown track team!) and daughter, Nicole Marie, reside in Yorktown, VA.
