Oscar W. Rackle '06 was one of the first run-and-shoot basketball players in the country. His forte was running at full speed for the entire game, dodging all over the court in a constant effort to shake his man. Rackle used a running one-handed shot at least 30 years before the one-hander became routine in collegiate circles. Rackle led Brown in scoring three years and paced the New England hoopsters twice. In his first varsity game, Rackle tossed in 11 field goals, an exceptionally high output for that era. Frequently his points equaled or surpassed the total of the opposing team. In 1905 when Brown defeated Dartmouth, 18-17, Rackle scored 16 of Brown's points. A fine all-around athlete, the 5-6 Rackle also played halfback and quarterback on the football team.
