Richard B. Phillips ’50 made a dramatic debut on the track scene in the winter of 1948 when he leaped 6-7 in the K of C Meet to upset the national high jump champion, Dave Albritton, and set a new Boston Garden record. Long, lean, and lithe, the native of Hingham, Mass., went on to become the greatest high jumper ever to come out of New England. He was national indoor and outdoor champion in 1948-49 and was voted Rhode Island Athlete of the Year by Words Unlimited. In 21 major meets while at Brown, Phillips had 17 firsts, a second, a third, and two fourths. His top leap was 6-8 made at the Indoor Heps in 1949.
