Bradford F. Oxnard '22 won the Rhode Island State Amateur GoldChampionship in 1928 at Wannamoisett Country Club and repeated in1932. He was runner-up in this tournament three times - 1931, 1949,and 1957. Oxnard didn't take up gold until 1924 when he was workingwith the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad and finishinghis undergraduate work at Brown on a part-time basis. Operating ona very tight schedule, Oxnard was forced to do his golfing in theevenings, sometimes on local courses but more often than not inUnion Station, where his "mashie shots" were particularly hard onthe floor. In recent years, Oxnard has been one of the most ablesenior golfers in the nation. He is captain of the Rhode IslandState golf team that participates annually in the tri-statematches, which makes Oxnard the dean of Rhode Island amateurgolf.
