J. Russell McKay '11
Year Inducted: 1971
J. Russell McKay '11 was selected by Coach Robinson as the best all-around back he coached during his 24 years at Brown. The 6-0, 156-pounder was a graceful runner with a long, loping stride who was a threat from any point on the field. A crisp blocker despite his lack of six, he continually shook Bill Sprackling '12 loose for long jaunts. Pudge Heffelfinger of Yale included McKay in his list of the 10 best punters he'd ever seen. Captain McKay scored nine touchdowns in his last year, including four in one game, and ended his career with 111 points, fourth highest in Brown history. Not a rah-rah type of leader, McKay was held in exceptionally high esteem by his teammates. "Just a few soft words from Russ in the locker room before a game and you'd go out on the field and break a leg for him," says Prof. Walter H. Snell '13, a teammate.
