James P. McGuinness '56, a two-time All-Ivy tackle, was one of three Bruins selected for the All-Ivy Team of the Decade. The 6-0, 205-pounder from Rumson, N.J., captain of the undefeated Cubs of 1952, was one of the quickest and best linemen in the East in the mid 1950's. A vicious offensive blocker, McGuinness' forte was defense, where his cat-like reactions, lateral movement, and clean tackling were his trademark. In Brown's 14-6 victory over Harvard in 1955, Coach All-Kelley was able to overload his defense to the left to stop the Crimson's single wing power, leaving McGuinness all alone on the right side between the center and end.
