Dr. Frederick W. Marvel '94
Year Inducted: 1971
Frederick W. Marvel ’94 was athletic director at Brown for 35 years, during which time he realized his cherished ambition of “a team for every man and every man for a team.” When he arrived at Brown, only about 50 men were participating in varsity athletics. At the time of his death in 1938 the figure was 1,000. As an undergraduate, Marvel was on the track team for four years, serving as captain for two. He held four Brown track records and was New England Intercollegiate champion in the broad jump. Dr Marvel was athletic director at Wesleyan before returning to Brown in the same capacity. He was president of the N.E. Intercollegiate Track & Field Association and was the recipient in 1938 of its medal as dean of N.E. college athletic directors. Fair play, utmost consideration for an opponent, the establishment of business-like management of intercollegiate athletics, and a deep personal interest in the men who play the game were trademarks of Dr. Marvel.
