Lance P. Keigwin ’73, a high school All American swimmer out of Long Beach, NY, was actively recruited by all the nation’s swimming powers but ended up in the rather chummy confines of Brown’s ancient Colgate Hoyt Pool. There were extenuating circumstances, namely that Keigwin came from a “Brown” family. His grandfather was Henry Keigwin, Class of 1879; his father is Lloyd Keigwin ’26, and his brother is Lloyd Keigwin, Jr. ’69. Young Lance was also brought up in a swimming tradition. His mother, Pat, was a swimmer of national reputation, his brother, Lloyd, competed at Brown, his sister, Lissa, was a state champion in Arkansas, and his sister, Janet, was an outstanding performer in the Long Beach Recreational League. During his days at Long Beach High, Lance Keigwin was All-State for three years, set eight varsity records, and captained the team in his senior season. He also captained the Brown freshman team while setting ten Cub records in the freestyle, medley relays, butterfly, and backstroke, and finishing the season undefeated. Six varsity records fell during the next three years: 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay, 500-yard freestyle, and 100-yard butterfly. Keigwin captained the Bruins his last two seasons. The freestyle specialist was outstanding in the New Englands. He took the 200-yard freestyle as a sophomore in 1971, missed retaining his title by a tenth of a second the next year, and then came back to capture the event again in 1973. “Lance had to make a tremendous sacrifice as a junior,” Coach Ed Reed says. “We decided to peak for the Easterns rather than the New Englands, and his times at the Easterns were therefore faster. They would have won him the 100 and 200-yard freestyle in the New Englands. But then, Lance was always team oriented.” Lance Keigwin is currently a program specialist with the New York Regional Office of the Social Security Administration.
