Judith Gracey ’81 was an exceptionally well-roundedathlete in track and field, winning a number of different sprintevents, and setting several records along the way.  While atBrown, Gracey solidified her legacy by winning five HeptagonalChampionships, and a New England Women’s Championship. Her times remain in Brown’s top-10 in five different events,despite having competed nearly 30 years ago.

Despite coming to Brown without being recruited as an athlete,Gracey made an immediate impact in her freshman season in1978.  She ran a superlative 11.7 seconds in the 100 yard dashat the Heptagonal Championship to capture her first title. Along with three teammates, Gracey then followed later that daywith another championship in the 4x400 relay.

Following a solid sophomore season, Gracey was back in thewinner’s circle in 1980, leading the Bears to their firstteam championship in program history.  She showed off herversatility by winning the long jump at Heps with a leap of18’4.75”.  Gracey also went on to capture theindividual New England Championship in the 200 meters, running itin 25.2 seconds.  Following her lead, Brown also took the teamtitle under head coach Sirkka Williams, an impressive feat for arelatively young program. 

Gracey wrapped up her career with another outstanding season in1981.  She repeated as the long jump champion at Heps,notching a jump of 17’6.75” to take first.  Graceyalso captured the 100 meter title with a run of 12.19 seconds, herfifth Heps crown in four seasons.  At the time of hergraduation, Gracey held school records in the 100, 200, and longjump, a tremendous accomplishment. 

Following her time at Brown, Gracey went to law school at theUniversity of Cincinnati.  After graduating and returning toMichigan, where she grew up, she clerked for a circuit court judgeand worked in the city attorney’s office as the assistantcity attorney.  Gracey then went into private practice, whereshe worked for a personal injury firm for a year before startingher own practice in 1990.  She now maintains her own generallaw firm, which handles personal injury, probate and estates,sports and entertainment, commercial and criminal law.  Graceycurrently resides in West Bloomfield, Michigan with her fosterdaughter, Jessica.
