 Barrington, RI
Year Inducted: 1993

When former Brown crew coach Vic Michalson told the selection committee tat Steve Gladstone was the coach to bring Brown crew to new heights, he certainly was right! Steve became Brown rowing coach in 1981 and the rest is history. Steve has had success since he began. A graduate of Syracuse, he coached the Princeton freshman to two second-place finishes at the IRA. From there it was on to Harvard where, as varsity lightweight coach, his crew had four undefeated seasons, four Eastern Sprint Championships and two victories at Henley. Heading west to the University of California, he had three undefeated dual race seasons and an IRA Championship in 1976.

Steve’s success at Brown has been outstanding. Winners of dual meets over the years, there isn’t space here to hit but a few highlights. The 1987 crew won both the Eastern Sprints and the IRA Championships. This was the first time in 24 years that a crew had won both events the same year. In 1984 there was the first ever Eastern Sprints title and capturing the Henley Regatta’s coveted Ladies Challenge Plate.

This year, however, saw Gladstone’s crew “take home all the marbles.” Winning began last fall for this group when they won four major “head” races. During the season they swept all their dual races, won the Eastern Sprints, the IRA, and went on to win the National Championship at Cincinnati. From there it was off to the Henley where they defeated international crews to win the Ladies plate again. Steve is also active beyond Brown. He’s been a member of the Olympic Rowing committee and in 1984 and 1985 he was the expert commentator for Olympic rowing events for both ABC and NBC TV. Steve and his wife, Therese, reside in Barrington.
