Jack Gilbert grew up on the East Side of Providence, and came to Brown from Deerfield Academy. A member of one of Brown's finest hockey teams, Jack (after skating forward as a sophomore) ended up playing strong defense for Wecky Moulton with Jake Murphy, Fred Shepherd and Bob Maley. The 1950-51 team won the League title and went to the Final Four, losing in the final game to Michigan. Senior year Jack was co-captain of the Bears with Al Gubbins and at the seasons' conclusion he was selected to the All-League 1st Team as well as the All-East and All-New England Teams. Following his senior year, Jack was selected to the 14-man American Hockey Association team to play in the World Championships in Germany. He and a Dartmouth player were the only Eastern players selected. While at Brown Jack also lettered in soccer and baseball. During his senior year the baseball team also made the NCAA Playoffs. Jack, who is retired, currently winters in Stuart, Florida, and in the summer he and his wife, Marilyn, can be found in Hyannisport on the Cape. Jack has two grown children, Spencer and Dana, as well as three grandchildren.
