William J. Gilbane '33, in both leadership and ability, was one of the best football captains Brown has ever had. He was fullback and leader of the 7-1 team of 1932, a team that met and defeated previously undefeated opponents through the first seven weeks of the season before bowing to undefeated, untied, and unscored upon Colgate on Thanksgiving morning. The 5-11, 185-pound Gilbane earned All-East recognition and played for Dr. Jock Sutherland in the North-South game in December of his senior year. Gilbane also played baseball on the Hill, won the N.E. freshman wrestling championship, was boxing champion of the college, and served as class marshal. Before going into business, Gilbane was head coach at Westminster College and head freshman coach at Brown. In 1957, Bill Gilbane was named to Sports Illustrated's Silver Anniversary team.
