Thomas F. Gilbane '33, president and treasurer of Gilbane Building Company of Providence, was the starting offensive center and defensive linebacker on three of Coach Tuss McLaughry's finest elevens, teams that had an accumulative record of 20-7-1. The Cinderella team of 1932 met and defeated previously undefeated opponents for seven consecutive weeks before losing to Coach Andy Kerr's undefeated, untied, and unscored upon Colgate team on Thanksgiving morning before 32,000 people at Brown Stadium. According to Coach McLaughry, Gilbane's spirit and leadership added to his greatness as a football player. He was an honorable mention All-American choice in 1932 and was the starting center for the East in the annual East-West game. As captain of the track team, Gilbane set the shot-put record and became the second Bruin ever to win an IC4A championship, taking the title at the 1932 indoor meet with a heave of 47-0 ½. He also set a New England record for the discus at 140-80 feet. He was president of the Cammarian Club, treasurer of his class, and a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
