The late George Gibbons ranks as one of the greatest and most versatile swimmers of his time. His versatility of events, ranging from the 220 free to the 440 free to the 200 breast to the 150 back to the 300 intermediate medley to all the relays, allowed his coaches to utilize him where he would be needed most. His success is evidenced by his record-setting performances at the New England Championships. As a freshman, he swam the leadoff leg of the 400 yard freshman relay which won with a record time of 3:48.4. As a sophomore, he set a New England record in the 200-yard breast (2:27.6) and an unofficial New England mark in the 300-yard IM (3:50.5) since it occurred in an All-Star meet. As a junior, he had his best season, winning both the 440-yard freestyle (5:04.2) and 300-yard IM (3:50.2) in New England record times. As a senior, he placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke, second in the 300-yard IM, and was a member of the fourth place 400-yard relay team. Brown won the New England Team Championships his sophomore and junior seasons. He was also dominant in dual meets, considering he never finished below second place. Success at National AAU meets ranks Gibbons among the best of his time, as he placed fifth in the 200 breaststroke as a junior and took third in the 300 IM as a senior.
