John A. Gammons '98 was one of the most prominent sports figuresof his time. He was a football, baseball, and track star at Brown,a preparatory and college coach, a pioneer in pro football, aNational League baseball player, and a RI amateur golf champion. Anelusive halfback, Gammons scored 11 touchdowns in his seniorseason, including TD runs of 85, 80, and 75 yards. Daff Gammons'speed helped him in track and baseball. In 1896 he was anoutfielder on the Brown nine that won the Eastern championship andthen defeated Chicago in a best of three series for the nationalchampionship. A year later, Gammons was a member of the relay teamthat defeated Dartmouth in the BAA games. He played pro footballwith Duquesne and the Homestead A.C. before signing a major leaguecontract with the Boston Nationals in 1901. In his three years ashead football coach at Brown, Gammons' teams were 17-10-2.
