Brendan R. Finneran ’97
Year Inducted: 2011
The class of 1997 was one of the most talent rich in the long history of Brown Football. The 1996 All-Ivy team included 11 Brown players, a number almost unheard of for a non-championship team. Brendan Finneran ’97 was one of those All-Ivy players and earlier that season had been voted the sole team captain by his teammates in a testament to his leadership both on and off the field.
Finneran’s freshman year at Brown was also the first season freshmen were eligible for varsity play. He is recognized as the first freshman to start a varsity football game at Brown University and during his four years on College Hill, he never relinquished his starting role. He was an All-Ivy selection from 1994-96 and his defensive coordinator, Don Brown, now the defensive coordinator at UConn, said he had never coached a tougher player.
As a junior, Finneran received the Brown Football
Association’s Defensive Lineman Award while also earning
All-New England Team honors. In his senior season, he made his
second-straight appearance on the All-New England Team while
also being awarded the Broomhead Memorial Trophy, which is
given to the player whose continuous and generous
contributions to Brown athletics and loyal devotion to
his University promise to make him an ambassador of Brown in
the tradition of Fred Broomhead.
In 2003, Finneran received the ultimate compliment from his teammates and fellow Brown football alumni when he was selected as a member of Brown’s 125th Anniversary Team. Arguably the 50 best players in 125 years of Brown Football, seven defensive linemen made the team and with this year’s induction, all seven of them now belong to the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame.
Finneran currently works as a Portfolio Manager and Trader at Rampart Investment Management in Boston, Masachusetts. In 2002, he married Andrea Wrobleski ’00 and the couple have three children: Daniel, Jack and JuliaBelle.
