William K. Engeman '61 played a greater role than any other undergraduate in helping crew move from club to varsity status. A graduate of Washington & Lee High School in Arlington, VA., where he had extensive rowing experience, Engeman was stroke of the varsity for three years and captain in 1961. A natural-born leader, he worked closely with Coach Whitey Helander to get a large and enthusiastic group of undergraduates out for crew in 1959. It was this group that banded together, worked exceedingly hard, and won three straight Dad Vail Regattas for Brown in 1959-60-61. It was largely on the performance of this Cinderella Crew that the University based its decision to recognize crew as a varsity sport for 1962.
