Charles C. Chester '89
Sport: Swimming & Diving
Year Inducted: 1997
Charles Chester became one of Brown’s top divers in spite of “being terrified of it.” He says Coach Dave Sias had the humor, patience and persistence that helped him confront the fear and accomplish more than he ever thought possible.
As a sophomore, junior and senior, he won 80% of all dual meets. In 1989 he was First Team All Ivy in the one and three meter diving events. That same year he was the Eastern Seaboard Champion in the three meter event, to become Brown’s first Eastern Seaboard Champion. He also placed second in the one meter at the same meet, while qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in the one and three meter boards. At the Easterns, Charles was the recipient of the Carmichael Award as the outstanding diver!
Charles holds three of the four Brown diving records: 6 dive 1-meter, 6 dive 3-meter, 11 dive 3-meter.
Currently, Charles is a Ph.D candidate at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, while working with the Kendall Foundation in Boston and the World Foundation for Environment and Development.
Charles and his wife reside in Cambridge with their miniature dachshunds, Welling and Cailidgh.
